Robert Chambers is an American criminal, and he was named as the Preppy Killer and the Central Park Strangler by the media after August 26, 1986, for the murder of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in New York City’s Central Park.

Later, he changed his story during the ensuing investigation and said that Levin’s death was an accident and caused him to push her off when Levin caused him pain as she sexually assaulted him.

Yes, Robert Chambers is still in jail. However, he was sentenced to 15 years in jail, and as per the sources, he was freed from Auburn Prison on February 14, 2003.

Again in 2008, he pleaded guilty to selling drugs and was sentenced to 19 years on the drug charge.

And as of 2021, he is at Shawangunk Correctional Facility. Further, his earliest release date from prison is January 25, 2024.

Before his release in 2003, Robert served his entire prison term due to multiple infractions. Likewise, Chamber’s release was a media circus, with media sources staking out prime sections of the sidewalk opposite the prison. Journalists were present there thirteen hours before his 7:30 am release time. 

The same day, Dateline NBC interviewed Chambers, and he said that Levin’s death was an accident and he strangled Levin accidentally as she was hurting him while having an intimate moment.

More, Robert also falsely denied that he had been disciplined in prison.

Details On Robert Chambers’s Parents

Robert Chambers was born on September 25, 1966, to his parents, Phyllis Chambers and Robert Chambers, Sr. As per his bio, Robert’s father was a video cassette distributor. Meanwhile, his mother worked as a private nurse.

Chambers’s family lived in a working-class section and later moved to the Upper East Side when Chambers’ parents divorced.

Robert spent most of his childhood with his mother who worked to pay for his childhood attendance at prestigious prep schools. Having less money than his classmates, Robert faced social problems, including difficulty socializing with his peers.

Additionally, Chambers was accepted by Boston University, but he was forced to leave the university after one semester for reasons like using a stolen credit card.
