YNW Melly Sentenced To Years In Prison: When Will He Be Released?

In February 2019, YNW Melly was arrested for the double murder of two fellow rappers from the “YNW” collective.

The killing of YNW Sakchaser/ Anthony Williams, 21, and YNW Juvy/ Chris Thomas, 20, occurred in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on October 26, 2018.

YNW Melly has been in jail for over three years, awaiting trial for the murders of his friends. He is accused of shooting his associates in a car and leading authorities to think they were killed in a drive-by.

He was charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and would receive life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Authorities believe Melly conspired with another YNW rapper Cortlen Henry (YNW Bortlen), to stage the action. The latter allegedly drove the victims to the hospital, where they succumbed to their wounds.

As things stand, it is improbable that he will be released from jail soon or ever if convicted.

Will YNW Melly Face Death Penalty?

In March 2019, YNW Melly pleaded not guilty to the double-murder charges, and the case has been a rollercoaster ride.

Initially, he was said to face the death penalty, but judge Andrew Siegel decided to overrule the decision back in July.

However, on November 9, the ultimate punishment was put back on the table as an option if YNW Melly was found guilty during the trial.

Melly’s defense team had convinced Judge Siegel to leave the death penalty after arguing that the prosecution took too much time to give official notice about the same.

However, the State successfully argued in appeals court that they issued the notice of death penalty as an option when Melly was initially arrested in February 2019, according to a Billboard report published on November 10.

The decision on whether Melly will face the death penalty will move up to Florida Supreme Court.

The rapper has a history of trouble with the law. In late 2015, he was arrested for firing at a group of students near Vero Beach High School.

He subsequently got convicted of two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and discharging a firearm in public, for which he served several months in jail.

YNW Melly has also been arrested for violating probation, possession of marijuana, possession of weapon/ ammunition by a convicted felon, etc.
