Abigail Klobuchar Bessler was born with the condition that she could not swallow. For the first three years of life, she was fed through a tube into her stomach.
Abigail Klobuchar Bessler is the only child of Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and her husband, John Bessler.
Initially, they didn’t know what was wrong as medical professionals ran test after test. Sadly, Amy Klobuchar got kicked out of the hospital 24 hours after giving birth.
The politician knew her daughter was very sick, but insurance company rules forced her to leave the hospital.
Amy said she was a new mom with a sick baby and could have just let it go. But she decided not to stand by and allow what happened to her to happen to anyone else.
As a result of the trauma, Abigail’s mother went on to lobby the Minnesota state legislature to ensure that new mothers and their newborn children could stay in the hospital for 48 hours.
Because of the law’s success, then-President Bill Clinton declared it a federal statute. Amy often talks about how her daughter fueled her career in interviews.
